New IIT in Goa, set to be operational in 2016-17

It was announced that a new branch of Indian Institute of Technology would be opened in Goa and be fully operational from 2016-17. The Union Defense Minister of our country, Manohar Parrikar made a tweet in this regard saying that he is very thankful to our HRD minister Smriti Irani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving a nod to setting up a new IIT in Goa.


Chief Minister of Goa, Laxmikant Parsekar also stated that there will be adequate coaching centers setup in the state to help students train for it. The government has decided on a Loliem site for IIT Goa which will be preferable as a knowledge center. It measures 280 acres and will be perfect for such a setup. This will open up new possibilities for Goa as becoming better in the field of knowledge and surely a huge advancement for the country as a new top class institute will be opened up.

The site was inspected on May 18 and they finalized on the Loliem site as everything was quite suitable regarding the place and its environment. This IIT will have its temporary campus with Goa Engineering College and it will offer around 90 seats with 30 seats for each particular stream. The land on which the IIT is going to be setup is owned by local people but they have already granted the NOC to the government.

It will be exciting to see an all new IIT setup in the state of Goa and there will be additional 90 seats for people who will be competing in the annual JEE exams. At first, it will only have 3 streams to start with but later, they will try and open up either more seats or more streams to cater to more students.
